Cindy Sherman, renowned as a chameleon; uses her own image at the centre of an astonishing gallery of character studies, developed over decades. Sherman has positioned photography as one of the most important contemporary art forms, expanding on contemporary society’s recurrent fascination with female appearance, narcissism, cults of celebrity, aspirational culture, and emotional fragility. She is widely recognised as the most significant and influential artist to have emerged from the ‘Pictures’ generation in New York in the late 1970s and continues to influence a new generation of artists. ‘Cindy Sherman’ will be the first in Australia to exhibit the artist’s large scale photographs made since 2000.
